Plain-language answers, drawn from the literature.

What the evidence says about specific conditions, how dosing works, and what to watch for.

Conditions in focus

Multiple sclerosis & spasticity

Spasticity raises muscle tone, making muscles stiff and hard to move. Cannabinoid extract is explored when other medicines haven’t helped, usually as a sublingual medication trialled over four weeks before continuing.

Sleep disorders

The endocannabinoid system helps regulate the sleep–wake cycle. CBD may interact with receptors influencing sleep and also reduce anxiety and pain that interfere with rest.

Neuropathic pain

Reviews suggest cannabinoids may ease inflammatory and neuropathic pain via glycine and serotonin pathways; combined CBD/THC has relieved neuropathic pain in clinical trials abroad.

Chemotherapy nausea

Across randomised trials, cannabinoid-based medicines reduced nausea and vomiting comparably to conventional anti-sickness drugs, though side effects were more common.

How dosing works

Cannabinoid medicine is titrated — started low and adjusted slowly. A specialist assesses your condition and history, sets a starting dose, and reviews (often after about four weeks) before continuing. Drops, capsules and topicals each give a different, controllable way to dose.

Who should not use it

Cannabinoid medicines are generally avoided in pregnancy and breast-feeding, under-18s, and people with certain psychiatric, heart, liver or kidney conditions or a history of substance dependence. They can interact with many medicines — always give your doctor a full list.
